Which Sources AI Cites for CRM Software: A Look at AI Citations

When B2B buyers ask an AI assistant for CRM software, which sources does the AI actually cite back? Across 48 citations pulled from 6 CRM buyer queries on Perplexity and ChatGPT, the most-cited sources in this cut were techradar.com (4 citations), followed by a tie between monday.com, hubspot.com, salesforce.com, zoho.com and pipedrive.com (3 each). That is the short answer. The longer answer, and what it means for a CRM vendor, is below.

I’m Andrii Byzov, a fractional CMO for B2B tech who runs AI search optimization for B2B SaaS. This post is a per-category slice of my AI-Search Visibility Benchmark, which logged 1,055 citations across 508 domains and 148 queries on Perplexity and ChatGPT. Here I zoom into the CRM category only. The sample is small, so read every number as directional, not precise.

Key takeaways

What the CRM data shows

The CRM cut covers 6 buyer-style queries, the kind a buyer types when looking for a tool, and the 48 source citations the two engines returned across them. Those citations landed on 30 distinct domains. That spread is the first thing worth noting: with 48 citations split across 30 domains, the answer set is fragmented rather than owned by one or two names.

Here are the top sources by citation count in this CRM cut:

SourceCitationsType
techradar.com4Tech media
monday.com3Vendor
hubspot.com3Vendor
salesforce.com3Vendor
zoho.com3Vendor
pipedrive.com3Vendor
g2.com2Review
crm.org2Review / community
forbes.com2Tech media
freshworks.com2Vendor

A few patterns stand out, with the caveat that these are small counts.

First, tech media shows up at the top. TechRadar led the cut, and Forbes also appeared. These are independent editorial sites that publish CRM roundups and comparisons, and the engines leaned on them.

Second, vendor sites are well represented. monday.com, hubspot.com, salesforce.com, zoho.com, pipedrive.com and freshworks.com all earned citations directly. When a buyer asks for CRM options, the engines sometimes cite the vendors’ own pages, which means a clear, well-structured product site can be a citable source in its own right.

Third, review and comparison sites appear but did not run away with it. g2.com and crm.org each picked up 2 citations. They are part of the mix rather than the whole story here.

The headline pattern is the lack of a clear winner. The leader sat at 4 citations and a wide group clustered at 3 and 2. In this snapshot, AI assembled CRM answers from a spread of tech media, review sites and vendor pages rather than naming one canonical source.

What it means for a CRM vendor

If you market a CRM and you want to show up when an AI recommends tools, the practical read is straightforward: be present and accurate on the sources AI is already pulling from for your category.

In this cut, that points to three places. Tech media, where roundups and comparisons like the ones on TechRadar and Forbes get cited, so earned coverage and accurate listings matter. Review and comparison sites such as G2 and crm.org, where your profile, category placement and recency feed what AI can quote. And your own vendor pages, which appeared directly in the citations, so clear, structured, factual product and pricing pages give the engines something clean to lift. This is the core of generative engine optimization: making sure the sources AI trusts describe you correctly.

Because the answer set is fragmented, presence across several sources tends to beat betting everything on one. No single domain owns the CRM answer, so showing up across tech media, review sites and your own pages spreads your odds of being the cited name. For more on this fragmentation across categories, see the most-cited sources in AI search for B2B SaaS.

One thing this data does not tell you: it does not rank product quality. A citation count reflects whether a source appeared in AI answers, not whether a CRM is good or whether a media site is authoritative. Treat it as a map of where the engines looked, not a leaderboard of who is best.

The honest caveat

This is a small per-category sample. It rests on 6 CRM queries across 2 engines in a single snapshot, part of a wider benchmark of 1,055 citations and 508 domains across 148 queries. With only 48 citations in the CRM cut, a difference of one or two citations is well within noise, so the ranking is directional and not a precise order of merit. No source dominated, and these results shift as engines, content and queries change.

What holds up is the shape of it: AI builds CRM recommendations from a blend of tech media, review sites and vendor pages, with no single owner. The job of AI search optimization is to improve your odds of being among the sources it cites, over time, inside systems no one fully controls. FAQ

Which sources does AI cite most for CRM software? In this small per-category cut, across 48 citations from 6 CRM buyer queries on Perplexity and ChatGPT, techradar.com led with 4 citations, then monday.com, hubspot.com, salesforce.com, zoho.com and pipedrive.com tied at 3 each. Counts are directional from one snapshot, not a quality ranking, and no single source dominated.

Do AI engines only cite review sites for CRM? No. The CRM cut shows a mix of tech media like techradar.com and forbes.com, review and aggregator sites like g2.com and crm.org, and vendor sites like hubspot.com, salesforce.com and zoho.com. Citations spread across source types rather than concentrating on one.

How can a CRM vendor earn more AI citations? Be present and accurate on the sources AI already pulls from for your category. In this cut that meant tech media, review and comparison sites, and well-structured vendor pages. There is no guarantee of placement, so the realistic goal is improving your odds over time.

How reliable is this CRM citation data? Treat it as directional. It is a small sample of 6 CRM queries across 2 engines in one snapshot, drawn from a wider benchmark of 1,055 citations and 508 domains across 148 queries. Counts indicate presence in AI answers, not source quality or product ranking.
