How to Get Cited by ChatGPT: A B2B Playbook

ChatGPT recommends companies based on what it has read and what it trusts. It pulls from training data and, when browsing, from live search results, then assembles an answer that names specific vendors. Getting cited is about being present, consistent, and corroborated across the sources the model relies on, especially trustworthy third-party pages, not about a single trick on your own site.

I’m Andrii Byzov, a fractional CMO for B2B tech. This is one of the highest-impact moves in AI search optimization right now, because buyers increasingly ask ChatGPT for a shortlist before they ever reach your site. It pairs with my broader guide on getting recommended across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews.

Key takeaways

How ChatGPT forms a recommendation

When someone asks ChatGPT for the best vendors in a category, the model is not reading your marketing site in that moment unless it browses. It is drawing on a picture built from everything it absorbed in training, updated by live results when browsing is on. Two forces shape who gets named.

The first is corroboration. If several credible sources describe you as a leading option in your category, the model treats that as a signal and repeats it. Research into AI recommendations keeps pointing to the same thing: a large share of brand suggestions trace back to third-party best-of lists and comparison pages, not the company’s own claims. The second is clarity. If your entity facts are consistent, the model knows who you are and can match you to the right question with confidence. A fuzzy or contradictory presence makes it hedge or default to a clearer rival.

The playbook

Earning ChatGPT citations is a campaign, not a setting. Here is the order I work in.

LeverWhat it looks like
Third-party presenceGet named on credible best-of and comparison pages in your category
Entity consistencySame core facts on your site, profiles, and listings everywhere
Own authoritative pagesPublish your own honest comparison and roundup content
Crawlable clarityAnswer-first pages the model can read and lift when browsing
MeasurementTrack named queries and how you are described over time

The top row is where most B2B teams under-invest. You can write the best pages on your own domain and still lose to a competitor who shows up on the lists the model trusts.

What you can do this quarter

  1. Map the queries. Write down the exact questions a buyer would ask ChatGPT about your category. These are your targets.
  2. Audit your presence. Ask those questions, browsing on and off, and record whether you are named and how. This is your baseline.
  3. Fix your entity. Reconcile inconsistent facts across your site, LinkedIn, and major listings. The model needs a single clear story. See entity SEO.
  4. Earn mentions. Pitch to be included on legitimate best-of and comparison pages, and publish your own honest roundups with clear inclusion criteria.
  5. Re-test and track. Recommendations move slowly, so measure monthly, the same way you would track AI visibility.

A realistic note: this improves your odds, it does not guarantee a citation. The model is a moving target and you do not control it. What you control is being the clearest, best-corroborated option in your category, which is exactly what tends to get named.

FAQ

How does ChatGPT decide which companies to recommend? It draws on training data and, when browsing, on live results. Recommendations skew toward companies described consistently across the web, mentioned on authoritative third-party pages, and clearly matched to the question. Best-of lists and comparison pages have outsized effect.

Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT answers? Not for the organic answer. You cannot buy a recommendation in the response. You influence it indirectly by being present and consistent across the sources the model reads, and by keeping your pages clear and crawlable.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT? It varies and is not instant. Training data refreshes on its own cycle, and browsing reflects what is indexed and trusted now. Building consistent facts and third-party mentions is a multi-month effort.

How do I check if ChatGPT recommends me? Ask it your buyers’ questions in a few phrasings, with browsing on and off, and note whether you are named and how you are described. Repeat over time and track changes, like rank tracking for AI.

If you want help turning this into a real campaign, getting cited is a big part of what I do as a fractional CMO. I’m on LinkedIn.
