The State of AI Search for B2B SaaS in 2026

AI search is no longer an emerging trend in B2B SaaS buying. By 2026 it is the starting point. This report pulls together the most credible published numbers on how buyers now use AI to research, how search behavior is shifting, and what it means for B2B SaaS marketing. Figures come from 2026 industry studies and vary by source and methodology, so treat them as directional, not precise.

I’m Andrii Byzov, a fractional CMO for B2B tech. I run AI search optimization for B2B SaaS, so this is the data I use to make the case, with sources at the end.

Key takeaways

1. AI is now the default research source

Forrester’s 2026 Buyers’ Journey Survey, covering nearly 18,000 global business buyers, found that the share using generative AI in their purchase process rose from 89% in 2025 to 94% in 2026. More striking: twice as many buyers named generative AI or conversational search as their most meaningful research source than named any other source, ahead of vendor websites, product experts, and sales reps.

The breakdown of what buyers use AI for is the part marketers should sit with:

Buyer task via AIShare of buyers
Compare vendors against each other~55%
Research product information~54%
Build an internal business case~47%

When buyers compare vendors and build their business case inside an AI tool, your shortlist position is being decided in a place your old funnel never measured. That is the core argument for generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization.

2. Humans still validate

It is not a clean replacement. Gartner, surveying 645 B2B buyers in late 2025, found 45% used GenAI, primarily to gather information on vendors and products, but 69% still turned to sales reps to validate AI-generated insights, using an average of seven information sources per purchase. The takeaway is not that AI replaces the rep. It is that AI now frames the conversation before the rep ever joins it. If the AI framed you out, the rep is closing a deal you were never in.

3. The click is disappearing

The shift to AI answers is showing up as zero-click behavior. Published 2026 analyses report roughly 34% zero-click for Google searches without an AI Overview, around 43% with one, and far higher inside AI Mode and chat assistants, where most sessions end with no website visit at all. Overall zero-click has climbed from about 50% in 2019 to the mid-60s percent in 2026, and AI Overviews now appear in roughly a quarter of Google searches, up sharply year over year.

For marketers raised on clicks and sessions, this is the hard part: more of the buyer journey is happening where your analytics cannot see it. That is the zero-click demand problem, and it is why measurement has to change.

4. AI traffic is small but high quality

The counterintuitive finding: even as clicks fall, AI referral traffic is rising fast and converting well. Several 2026 analyses put AI referral traffic at roughly 1% of total web traffic, growing month over month, with ChatGPT still the largest source but its share softening as Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity gain ground. Multiple reports also find AI-referred visitors converting at a materially higher rate than traditional organic, because the buyer arrives later and more qualified.

So the volume is low today. The trajectory and the quality are the story. A small stream of buyers who arrive having already shortlisted you, from inside an AI answer, is worth more than its raw size suggests.

What this means for B2B SaaS marketing

Five implications, in order:

  1. Being the cited answer is the new being shortlisted. If AI does not name you, you are not in the consideration set. See what is AI search optimization.
  2. Measure AI presence as a real metric. Track mentions and citations across engines, your share of model, not just rankings.
  3. Fix the foundation first. Entity clarity and structured data are the highest-leverage, fastest-moving layer. See entity SEO for B2B SaaS.
  4. Write answer-shaped content. AI engines lift extractable answers, not whole pages. See how to write content for AI search.
  5. Protect the story too. Monitor what AI says about you, because it can be wrong or stale. See AI reputation management.

The honest caveat

These figures come from different studies with different methods and definitions, so they disagree at the edges, and any single number should be read as directional. The direction, though, is not in doubt: AI is now where B2B buyers start. No one can guarantee placement inside systems they do not control, so the work improves your odds of being the cited answer over time. That is the realistic promise, and it is the whole job of AI search optimization. If you want to talk through where your category stands, I’m on LinkedIn.

FAQ

How many B2B buyers use AI to research vendors in 2026? Forrester’s 2026 survey of nearly 18,000 buyers found 94% used generative AI in their purchase process, up from 89% in 2025, with genAI and conversational search named the most meaningful research source by 2× more buyers than any other. Gartner found 45% used GenAI for vendor and product info. Figures vary by study.

What is the zero-click rate in AI search? Roughly 34% for Google without an AI Overview, around 43% with one, and far higher in AI Mode and chat assistants. Overall zero-click rose from about 50% in 2019 to the mid-60s percent in 2026. Figures vary by source and definition.

Is AI referral traffic valuable for B2B SaaS? It is small, around 1% of web traffic, but growing fast and converting well above traditional organic, because buyers arrive later and more qualified. The trajectory and quality matter more than today’s volume.

What should B2B SaaS marketers do about AI search? Measure AI presence, fix entity clarity and structured data, ship answer-shaped content, and build source authority. The goal is improved odds of being the cited answer, not a guarantee.
